Pre-Requisite:

Familiarity with Excel at a basic level (knowing how to open 
a file in Excel, selecting columns, copy -pasting data).

THE OUTLINE

Day 1

Session 1 (90 minutes)

9:00- 10:30 am

  • 20 minutes: Introduction to visualisations: Why we need it, why we need to be careful about interpreting it.
  • 20 minutes: Introduction to Bar charts of different kinds.
  • 20 minutes: Introduction to Pie and Doughnut charts of different kinds.
  • 15-20 minutes: Hands on applications in Excel.
  • 10 - 15 minutes buffer for discussion.


Session 2 (90 minutes)

11:00-12:30 pm

  • 10 minutes: Introduction to how charts lie
  •  20 minutes:What are the components of chart making and how these components can be misused to mislead public opinions.
  • 20 minutes: Example of misleading bar charts and pie charts from across the world.
  • 20 minutes: How to carefully interpret spatial maps, and detect misleading ones.
  • 20 minutes: Caveats of using similar visualisation tools across contexts.


Session 3 (90 minutes)

01:30-3:00 pm.

  • 15 minutes: Summary of Session 1 and 2.
  • 20 minutes: A group exercise based on different graphs that are presented to the participants. Followed by discussion of the same.

  • 20 minutes: What are some other visualisation tools that are used in popular media and public communication, how to interpret them?
  • 20 minutes:Equivalence between graphs and tables, when to use/avoid what.
  • 15 minutes: Concluding discussion/wrap up.

Dr. Tamoghna Halder

Tamoghna Halder is assistant professor at
the School of Arts and Sciences, Azim Premji University, Bangalore, where he teaches Economics. His research interest
lies in Economic History of Identities, as well as Economics and Politics of Identity. 

His doctoral research examines social mobility and segregation by caste in Bengal for a period of 150 years (1857 - 2017). He is currently teaching courses in Microeconomic Theory, Economics of Identity, Statistics, and Communicating Economics.
